Your replacement bank card arrives with a different number. A subscription still charges successfully the following month. That can be surprising if you assumed the old number’s disappearance would end every payment connected to it.
Some payment networks offer account-updating services. Visa’s Account Updater documentation, for example, describes exchanges of updated account information between participating issuers, acquirers and eligible merchants. Replacing a card is therefore not a reliable substitute for cancelling a service you no longer want. Participation and arrangements differ, so ask your issuer what applies to your card.
Make two lists, not one
Separate payments you want to continue from services you intend to cancel. For continuing payments, check the merchant’s payment settings and the next due date. Do not assume every merchant will receive an automatic update just because one did.
For unwanted services, use the provider’s cancellation process and keep the confirmation. Check whether cancelling ends renewal immediately, at the end of a paid period, or under another stated arrangement. A replacement card cannot answer that contractual question.
- Record the merchant name as it appears on the statement.
- Identify the account or subscription behind the charge.
- Note the next expected payment and the action taken.
- Revisit the list after the next statement arrives.
Resolve uncertainty through the right channel
If a charge is unrecognised or continues unexpectedly, contact the issuer through its official app or published contact route. Explain whether the problem is an unfamiliar payment, a cancelled subscription or a continuing service with outdated details. Those are different situations, and the provider may need different evidence.
Do not send a complete card number through an ordinary email to a merchant. Use its approved payment-update process. The useful result is a clear record of which services should continue and which should stop, rather than hoping the change of plastic will make that decision for you.
