Provisional Credit During a Bank Dispute Is Not the Final Decision

Your balance rises after you report a disputed transaction. It feels like the matter is settled, but the bank’s message calls the amount “provisional credit.” That word matters: the adjustment may give you access to funds while an investigation continues, rather than confirm that the bank has accepted your claim.

In the United States, Regulation E’s error-resolution procedures distinguish provisional credit from the final investigation result. The provision has conditions, exceptions and notice requirements. It is not a universal rule for every card purchase, transfer or country.

Keep the temporary entry attached to the case

Save the transaction reference, the date you reported it, the case number and the bank’s exact message. In your own account notes, identify the credit as temporary until the bank confirms otherwise. A balance shown in an app is an accounting observation; the investigation notice explains what the adjustment means.

For example, imagine that a disputed debit and a provisional credit appear on separate statement lines. Do not delete the debit from your spending record as though it never happened. Link the two entries and leave a place for the final outcome. This makes a later reversal or confirmation easier to reconcile.

  • Check whether the bank has requested further information and by when.
  • Use the bank’s verified app, website or published contact number to respond.
  • Keep copies of documents you submit, without sharing account details publicly.

Read the closing notice, even if the balance looks right

The bank may make the credit final, reverse it, or explain a different adjustment. Compare that notice with the statement and ask about anything that does not match. If you disagree, use the relevant complaint or review process and its actual deadline.

Before relying on the temporary amount for another payment, ask the bank how a reversal would be handled in your case. The useful habit is to track the dispute through to a documented conclusion, rather than treating the first reassuring balance as the last word.
